Why Aluminum?

For large window applications, where window weight is a serious consideration, aluminum is the best choice because of its high strength-to-weight ratio. Because of this unique quality, aluminum is the first choice for major commercial applications. However, that doesn't mean it's just skyscrapers; aluminum windows have several advantages for the residential customer:

  • Best for large applications: If you have a large window opening to fill aluminum is most often the best material for the job. Because large windows have a large surface area, natural forces like wind can put a tremendous amount of stress on the window frame making aluminum's comparitively high strength essential. Additionally, aluminum windows are lighter than other window types making them easier to install.
  • For coastal climates:  If you live on the ocean, as many in the Bay Area do, you need a window that can withstand strong gusts of wind and resist corrosion. Aluminum accomoplishes both.
  • For commercial projects:  As a building material, aluminum is cheaper, lighter and stronger than vinyl, fiberglass or wood. In addition, aluminum blocks out more sound than any other window type, making it popular for builders working in big cities where traffic noise is a major issue.
  • Considerations:  Aluminum's attractive strength-to-weight ratio does come at a cost-they are weaker insulators than the other replacement window types. In locations where energy bills are significant, aluminum's value as a material can easily be overshadowed by its poor insulation ratings.
